James Mackintosh Architects at The Listed Property Show - Malvern
We were delighted to take part in this year’s Listed Property Show, where our director, James Mackintosh, gave a talk entitled “Extending Your Listed Building – A Practical Guide for Homeowners.”
Drawing on more than a hundred successful heritage projects since founding the practice in 2017, James shared his insights on how to sensitively design and plan extensions to listed and historic homes. His presentation guided homeowners through each stage of the process – from understanding the significance of their building, to navigating planning and listed building consent, and working with the right team to bring their ideas to life.
Through real case studies from projects in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and South Oxfordshire, James demonstrated how thoughtful, evidence-based design can help families modernise their homes while preserving their historic character.
The session was designed to reassure and inspire, showing that extending a listed building doesn’t have to be daunting. With the right preparation, professional advice and creativity, even the most complex historic buildings can adapt beautifully for modern living.
Speaking after the event, James said:
“It was a pleasure to meet so many people committed to the care of our built heritage. The Listed Property Show provides an invaluable forum for sharing experience and inspiring good conservation practice.”
