Conservation

We believe in understanding the past to design for the future. Our historic environment is a precious cultural resource and our aim is to guide our clients in achieving bold but sensitive alterations that have optimum impact on the listed building, setting and environment.

As conservation architects the basis of our approach is simple: understanding place and the people that lived there, assessing significance and responding with sustainable sympathetic solutions.

We understand what is possible and will provide guidance on solutions that will gain consent, avoiding wasted time, money and the risk of delay.

James Mackintosh has over 15 years’ experience in working exclusively on listed buildings and is an accredited conservation architect on the AABC and RIBA register. James offers feasibility advice to help identify opportunities for improving historic houses, heritage sites and conservation areas.

We provide value for money, through providing the appropriate level of information required for your project.

Listed building consent is required for any work that will cause harm to historic fabric. This is particularly onerous on change of use projects where the building must be upgraded to meet building regulations. We have excellent technical knowledge and detailed appreciation of how the changes can be made. As a result, our applications include an appropriate level of design information to avoid pre-commencement conditions, programme delay and the need for further applications.

We provide our clients with a realistic budget and programme coordinating costs from other consultants and providing life time project costs to avoid surprises along the way.

We often manage projects from start to completion but will gladly provide the tools for our clients to carry out the work themselves.
